Mexico may seem new to the wine scene, but it has been making wine longer than any other country in the Americas. Today, Mexico produces wine in 17 states, and the wines are winning gold and silver distinctions in international competitions.
The country is already a popular vacation destination for its gorgeous beaches, but now you have another delicious reason to visit. Check out our list of fantastic wine festivals in Mexico listed by month, where you can taste and share in the country’s passion for wine.

Wine History of Mexico
After the Spanish conquered the capital city of Tenochtitlan in the early 1500s, they expanded northward, planting vineyards to grow grapes for wine and brandy. The terrain from Mexico City to Valle de Parras, and eventually into present- day California, proved ideal for grape cultivation.
Mexico might have developed into a wine production powerhouse if it had been allowed to continue. The Spanish crown relied heavily on taxes on exported goods, especially wine, to the New World. Grapes for wine and brandy were growing so well that the new residents of Mexico didn’t need the Old-World wine. In 1595, King Phillip II of Spain prohibited wine production in New Spain and all Spanish colonies, only allowing enough to be produced for church purposes.
This restriction remained in place until the Mexican War of Independence ended in 1821, 226 years later. Unfortunately, the next 100 years were marked by instability, as wars and political upheaval repeatedly disrupted agriculture and commerce. Prohibition in the United States in the 1920s sparked wine production in the Baja region, but it wasn’t until the 1970s, when European winemakers set their sights on expanding into the New World, that wine production finally took root and began to flourish.
Wine Development and Production in Mexico Today
For the past decade, wine tourism has seen tremendous growth in Mexico. In 2000, there were only 13 wineries in Baja California. According to recent data, there are now 150 wineries in this region as of 2025.
Also in 2025, Queretaro became the first D.O. (Designation of Origin) wine region in Mexico. And we’ve seen several wine festivals in Mexico pop up around the country.

January
Nación de Vinos (Nation of Wine)
What better place to have a wine festival than in the nation’s capital? Mexico City is known for its historical monuments and for being a foodie destination. Come taste the wines from all 14 states in one destination. People dress up for this one, so come taste wine in style. In 2026, Nacion de Vinos was held the last weekend in January. Watch for the 2027 dates.
February Wine Festivals in Mexico
Oaxaca Food & Wine Festival February 24-28,2027
New on the scene is the Oaxaca Food & Wine Festival. Only in its 2nd year, it’s been a huge hit to showcase wine from different regions of Mexico, plus mezcal, and regional Oaxacan cuisine. Started by the organizers of the Key West Food & Wine Festival, it’s well organized and showcases many artisanal specialties of Mexico. Follow them on social media or check out their website to find out what they plan for 2027.
The Oaxaca Food & Wine Festival tickets for 2027 will be on sale on November 1, 2026, but book your hotel early as Oaxaca has mostly boutique hotels.
6th Laguna Food & Wine Fest-Torreon February 27, 2026
The Laguna Food & Wine Fest focuses on the gastronomy and wine culture of Northern Mexico, such as Coahuila and Chihuahua. It features over 20 restaurants and wineries from Coahuila and other parts of Mexico. Celebrate northern Mexican cuisine alongside several wine brands from all over the country.
You can fly directly into Torreon from Dallas-Ft. Worth, Mexico City, Cancun, Guadalajara, Tijuana, and Cabo.
March Wine Festivals in Mexico
Bubbles Fest- Queretaro March 28-29, 2026
The Queretaro wine region is the leader in sparkling wine production in Mexico. The Spanish cava producer, Freixenet, noticed that the high altitude and diurnal shifts were perfect for cava in the 1970s. The Bubbles Fest celebrates the sparkling wine ranging from sweet to brut, made with wine grapes like Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parallada.
March is a great time to visit Central Mexico for warm days, cool nights, and to see the purple flowers of the jacarandas begin to bloom. Spend the day drinking your favorite with great weather, food, and bands at Freixenet’s large estate, about an hour from Queretaro Centro.
Aguascalientes Wine Fair March 28-29, 2026
The Aguacalientes Wine Fair features 150+ national and international wine labels. Check two growing wine regions off your wine bucket list, and visit Zacatecas as well. Both Aguascalientes and Zacatecas are UNESCO World Heritage Site cities with a growing interest in wine.
April
Shells and New Wine Festival-Ensenada, April 19, 2026
The 26th edition brings together 80 Baja California wineries in Enseneada, offering tastings of 160+ new wines. Over 50 local restaurants will showcase seafood dishes, while aquaculture and fishing producers present fresh Pacific and Sea of Cortez products. Isla Marina will host guest chefs, cooking demos, culinary school creations, and an educational pavilion in collaboration with UABC’s Faculty of Marine Sciences.
May- June
11th Tinto Bajio Wine Festival- Leon, May 16-17, 2026
Celebrate the best of Mexican cuisine with wine! This festival brings together the wineries of Guanajuato and a few others from around the country with regional cuisine specialties in the capital of Guanajuato, Leon.
National Wine and Cheese Festival (Feria Nacional del Queso y el Vino) (Dates to be Announced)
The National Wine & Cheese Festival takes place over three weekends in May and June. This 3-day weekend event is the perfect opportunity to sample many local and a few national producers of wine, cheese, olive oil, ham, and ice cream in one of the prettiest pueblos magicos, Tequisquiapan.
In the past, the festival was held in the shade of Parque “La Pila”. In 2025, the vendors were set up around Plaza Miguel Hidalgo, and the bands were in the park. Just be warned, this is the hottest time of year. You might want to get a hotel in Tequisquiapan so you can escape to your room or a pool during the midday.
Festival Internacional del Vino San Luis Potosí May 29-30, 2026
Celebrate the first weekend in June at one of the largest international wine festivals in Mexico. This premier event in San Luis Potosi features over 500 wine labels, along with artisanal beer, mezcal, food, and live music. Music ranges from jazz to rock, and performers may surprise you with an impromptu flamenco dance.
After the festival, escape into the Sierra Gorda mountains, home to many waterfalls, just a few hours away.
July-August
Vendimias (Harvest Festivals)
Central Mexico mostly grows grapes that ripen early, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Tempranillo, Merlot, and Syrah. From the end of June through the beginning of September, many wineries will invite guests to their Vendimias, or harvest festivals. Some will have the traditional grape stomping, grill parties, and big bands. Other vendimias might feature opera singers or guest chefs. The wineries won’t announce their vendimias until a month before, but you are guaranteed some type of celebration during the latter half of summer.
36th Wine Fair- Ensenada August 7th, 2026
This event features 80 wineries and tastings of 160+ wines organized by grape variety to highlight the terroir in Ensenada. This makes it easier to find your favorite Petite Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon producer by tasting the wines side by side. Visitors can meet winemakers at the Producers’ Zone, enjoy dishes from 50+ regional restaurants, experience live music on five stages, and explore a guest wine region to celebrate and strengthen wine culture.
October Wine Festival in Mexico
5th Wine Without Borders Festival- Tijuana, October 3, 2026
The festival brings together attendees from the United States and Mexico, featuring 40 wineries with tastings and sales of 80+ wines, 25 regional restaurants, and a guest wine region pavilion. Guests can enjoy guided tastings, cooking demos by winemakers and guest chefs, and live music. This event celebrates Baja California’s wine and culinary culture while promoting cross-border connections and wine tourism.
Travel Tip: Stay in Tijuana or add an extra day of wine fun if you’re visiting San Diego!
Queretaro Regional Wine Festival- October 16-18, 2026
This festival highlights the wines from the Queretaro wine region (the only D.O. wine region in Mexico!). This festival has been held in different venues over the years. It’s a fun day out with tastings from different wineries, plus regional gourmet products, cheese producers, and select restaurants showcasing their specialties.
November Wine Festivals in Mexico
Wine Experience Mexico City November 5-6, 2026
Back in Mexico City, this event will gather more than 130 wineries, emphasizing premium wines, the cultivation of long-term business relationships, and top-tier educational content. The program will also include Italian regional masterclasses, such as those focusing on Piedmont, Tuscany, and Sicily, alongside sessions highlighting the wine regions of Vietnam, France, and other emerging or historically important areas in the global wine industry.
Travel Tip: Stay in Polanco and make reservations for Quintonil or Pujol, two of the World’s Best Restaurants.
Catando México Guanajuato November 21-22, 2025
Guanajuato City is one of the most picturesque in Mexico, and a perfect backdrop for a wine festival. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Guanajuato was the world’s leading silver extraction center in the 18th century. Today, it’s a colorful, walkable town with many of the roads running through tunnels underground.
The Catando Mexico Wine Festival sets up in the evenings on the main street of the city during the last weekend of November. Explore the Instagrammable alleys by day, and sample regional wine and other products by night.

December
Gastrovino Food & Wine Festival December 5-7, 2025
Experience the Best of Baja California Sur for three unforgettable days of wine, gastronomy, art, and culture in the magic town of Todos Santos. Saturday and Sunday activities will feature 36 restaurants and 22 wineries from various parts of the state and other regions of the country. This festival brings together local producers, chefs, artists, and a vibrant community celebrating the region’s rich traditions with pride.
